The humble Tungsten Droppers are amongst the most versatile items in the Thinking Anglers Terminal range. Whilst their obvious use is to help pin down your hooklink and keeping it inconspicuous, there are a couple of alternative uses I’ve found that can be beneficial in fine tuning your rig’s performance for tangle-free casting and consistent presentation.

By using a large figure eight loop for attaching the rig to my swivel on a helicopter set-up, (which makes the act of swapping over to a fresh rig a doddle) the doubled up ‘boom’ creates a stiffer anti-tangle kicker effect, in a similar way as the TA Long Anti-Tangle Sleeves with added putty on the tip works. By ‘butting up’ a Tungsten Dropper to the loop knot, it adds weight to the tip of the ‘kicker section’, aiding the anti-tangle properties of a coated braid rig in flight.

When it comes to pop-ups, the XL Tungsten Droppers can sometimes negate the need for putty on a Multi Rig set up with a small pop up, but also provide a solid anchor point for additional putty when using larger, more buoyant pop ups. I always keep a couple of these ‘Multi booms’ in my tackle box, ready to loop on and add a hook to whenever one is needed. The Droppers will withstand the fiercest of casts after giving the rig a good steaming to set the coating of the Camstiff dead straight.

When it comes to pop-ups, the XL Tungsten Droppers can sometimes negate the need for putty on a Multi Rig set up with a small pop up, but also provide a solid anchor point for additional putty when using larger, more buoyant pop ups. I always keep a couple of these ‘Multi booms’ in my tackle box, ready to loop on and add a hook to whenever one is needed. The Droppers will withstand the fiercest of casts after giving the rig a good steaming to set the coating of the Camstiff dead straight.

When it comes to using Hinged Stiff, Ronnie or 360° Rigs, rather than risking compromising the performance of the silky PTFE coated swivel, by clogging it up with sticky Rig Putty, a strategically placed XL Tungsten Dropper can be positioned on a stiff boom to not only perfectly balance the pop-up, but also allow a degree of control over how quickly the rig ‘kicks out’ and lays away from the lead arrangement. With a more buoyant 15mm pop up, it’s a simple case of adding a second Dropper (either standard or XL) to the boom and experimenting with their positioning to achieve a finite critical balancing of your hookbait.
