STEVE RENYARD SHOWS YOU HOW TO TIE THE BASIC COMPLICATED RIG, WHICH HE USED TO GREAT EFFECT IN HIS LATEST INSIGHTS FILM.

As the name suggests, the Basic-Complicated is a very simple rig to tie, yet it is very difficult for the carp to deal with! Although many would associate my angling and preferred method with the Withy Pool rig, when it comes to fishing over a spread of boilies, like I did in my Insights film, I always go for the Basic-Complicated.

What makes this rig so effective is the way it somehow manages to always single out the better fish, now most would maybe ask how this is possible? When a large carp feeds, it has to dip down to bring its head towards the bait. In comparison a smaller carp can just feed pretty much horizontally due to their size. A larger carp dips down, feeds, then uprights itself again and this is where this rig’s mechanics work a treat. By having it tied directly to a ring swivel on a lead clip without an anti-tangle sleeve, it allows the rig to have plenty of movement, so when the carp picks it up and uprights itself, it can’t deal with it.

A small mesh PVA bag, along with the fluorocarbon hooklink, allows the rig to be concealed perfectly amongst the free offerings, fooling any wary carp that may come along and show an interest.

Hook wise, you’ll notice the size is probably a lot smaller than you usually see with modern rigs. There’s no need for a large hook, as the hookbait and hook have enough separation to ensure the hook finds its place in the carp’s mouth. The size-7 Thinking Anglers Out-Turned Eye hooks are immensely sharp and have never let me down. I’ve landed numerous carp over the thirty-pound mark on them. As with all rigs, confidence is key and as you’ll see by the two larger fish from the session, they clearly work!

My final point on the rig is, when should it be used? Well, I’ve had bites on this rig in the silt, whilst stalking, in light weed and on gravel, so pretty much everywhere! However, I can’t emphasise how important that little PVA bag is to ensure the presentation is perfect by making certain tangles are eradicated.
